Economy, Morality, Gender, and Ethnic Stereotyping Critical Essay on Pinocchio Disneys Pinocchio has been a long time favorite of American culture. However, time has changed and so has our culture. We are no longer described or categorized by being white, European, primarily heterosexual, Protestant, and bourgeois. I have to argue that that stereotype is still in effect. As times have changed so have our people and their values. Now, we are described as The Melting Pot of religions, race, sex, and class. Pinocchio was fitting for the culture of 1940 but as for now it not so appropriate. Industrialism, Capitalism, and the ruling bourgeoisie are the themes in this movie not only because they probably reflect Walts own life but†¦show more content†¦I feel that the depiction of Gepetto is not all that bad. His morality is very high; he is caring, a hard worker, and a very loving man. He is brave (He lived in Monstero the whale!), truthful, and unselfish. He fed his cat basically the same thing he ate, and let’s be honest he did not have that much fo od to give. Yet, with all these attributes he is worthless because he has no money. He cannot help his â€Å"son† in any truly helpful way. He does not have the means to do so. Love means does not mean anything if one cannot put food on the table. Once again, the subject of economy is raised. How does one measure morality and economic level? They are two different entities and yet if one does not have the other they are not whole. On the other hand, Stromboli hasn’t got a moral bone in his body. Yet still, he has more money than Gepetto and has power to take Gepetto’s son. Also, the character â€Å"Honest John† acts as if he is rich, smart, and moral; hence, the name â€Å"Honest John†. The fox is portrayed as a liar and a criminal. These portrayals of the poor are very low. The depictions of the rich are equally as low. So, what is a person to believe? We must conclude that these stereotypes are preposterous. The end to the Great Depression came about in 1941 with Americas entry into WWII. Americans lives, by 1946, were in shambles.
